• Apple iPad details announced

After much hype and anticipation, Apple today announced details of their new iPad tablet style device. There had been much speculation about what the new device would be and it seems many reports seemed to be fairly accurate.

The device, with a 9.7in display, will comes with Wi-Fi and 3G options later in the year when it reaches the UK. With prices starting from $499 it comes in at price similar to a low-end laptop.

The question is, have Apple come up with a device that will attract a large enough user base, in the same way that they've achieved success with the iPod and iPhone. There are some features clearly missing, the fact that it's not pocket sized so can it be a true laptop replacement? It's not going to be a phone so you'll still need to carry your iPhone around as well, and there's no built in camera for video conferencing. It could be argued it's just a large iPod touch.

Apple are maybe counting on the fact that with the launch of their iBook system (i'm guessing it's pretty much iTunes for books) that it will attract the growing e-book reading population.

Having said that, with it being Apple, you can guarantee it will be slick and impressive and will attract a huge following. If you're able to tether it with your iPhone via the built in bluetooth then i'm sure many people will find uses for it. Turning up to demonstrate a client's new website or new logo design on an Apple iPad i'm sure will look more impressive and create a better impression than a clunky, ugly, cumbersome laptop. For that reason alone I'm sure Systemagic will be looking at buying one.. purely for demonstration purposes you understand!
